For Hummer H2 models with the 6.0L V8 engine, precise serpentine belt routing and installation are critical. Follow these steps:
Required Tools
- New GM OE-spec serpentine belt (check length)
- Serpentine belt tool (long-handled ratchet or specialty wrench)
- Flashlight for routing verification
Belt Routing Diagram (6.0L Vortec)
Rotate tensioner clockwise. From crankshaft pulley (center bottom):
- Up and clockwise over idler pulley (top center)
- Down and counter-clockwise around AC compressor (driver side)
- Directly across to power steering pulley (passenger side)
- Up and clockwise around tensioner pulley
- Down and clockwise around water pump pulley
- Straight across to alternator pulley (top passenger side)
Installation Procedure
Critical Step: Engine Cold - Allow engine to cool completely before starting.

- Locate spring-loaded tensioner on passenger side near alternator
- Insert belt tool into tensioner square drive hole
- Apply firm pressure toward engine front (clockwise) to fully retract tensioner
- Slip new belt onto crankshaft pulley first
- Route belt according to diagram ensuring ribs seat deeply in every pulley groove
- Verify clearance from engine block/frame before releasing tensioner
- Slowly release tensioner to apply belt tension
Avoid Common Errors
- Misrouting: Double-check alternator-to-water pump routing crosses power steering directly
- Partial Engagement: Visually confirm full seating in all pulleys - use flashlight
- Worn Tensioner: If tensioner arm moves freely without resistance, replace it
- Incorrect Tools: Slipped tools cause injury - use proper fitting belt wrench
Verification Testing
Start engine and immediately observe belt operation:
- Listen for chirping (indicating misalignment or slippage)
- Inspect for wobbling pulleys
- Check belt remains centered on all pulleys during operation
- Shut down immediately if abnormal noises occur
