In most gasoline engines, fuel injectors mount directly to the intake manifold or cylinder head. Their exact location depends on the injection system:
- Multi-Port Injection (MPI): Mounted on the intake manifold runners, near each intake valve port. This places them close to the engine's air intake path.
- Direct Injection (GDI): Positioned within the cylinder head, spraying fuel directly into the combustion chamber for higher efficiency.
- Throttle Body Injection (TBI): Attached centrally on the throttle body assembly above the intake manifold, often for older or simpler engines.
Visual Identification Guide
To locate fuel injectors during inspection:
- Under the hood: Open the engine compartment and identify the intake manifold – a large metal or plastic component leading air to the cylinders.
- Key markers: Look for the fuel rail, a pipe-like structure connected to all injectors. Injectors are typically cylindrical, threaded onto the rail and secured with electrical connectors for signal input.
- Reference points: A schematic diagram would show injectors at intake ports or cylinder head ports. Without an engine running, trace fuel lines from the tank to the rail for visual confirmation.
Practical Tips
Always disconnect the battery and depressurize the fuel system before handling to avoid leaks or injury. Consult your vehicle’s service manual for model-specific diagrams, as configurations vary by manufacturer and fuel type.
